Japanese Bonsai Tree

Origin and Care of the Japanese Bonsai Tree

The Japanese bonsai tree has always been a very popular decoration in homes, offices and others places. The term "Bonsai" is a Chinese word that means "tree in a pot". These miniature trees have always been adored by the Chinese and then eventually the Japanese which they popularized further. A Japanese bonsai tree was even featured in the movie "The Karate Kid" and every time people think of a bonsai tree the image of a Juniper bonsai tree pops into mind.

There are several species of bonsai trees and each and one of them has its distinct shape, size and style. You can use a pine tree, maple tree or an Azalea tree. It will all depend on your choice. You can buy them from nurseries and you have the option to get either an actual bonsai tree or seedlings. The only advantage of buying an actual tree is that it is already trimmed and shaped. It is up to you to continue with the maintenance.

To grow a Japanese bonsai tree, proper knowledge in culturing them is needed including proper positioning, watering, feeding and trimming. This is to be sure that they will grow healthy and very beautiful. In growing a Japanese bonsai tree, it is recommended that you follow the guidelines below:

Positioning of the bonsai tree:

Generally, a bonsai tree should never be placed in an area under direct sunlight. However, adequate sunlight is also needed. It is advisable to place them where there is fresh air and good humidity. It is easy to know if the place is inappropriate for the plant because of signs of discoloration and wilting. If this happens, immediately transfer the plant to a different place.

Watering of the bonsai tree:

Never let the bonsai tree dry out completely and do not over-water it as well. Regular monitoring of the soil is needed so that the plant will not die. During summer, water the plant several times a week and daily during very hot periods. Minimal watering is needed during cold seasons and winter.

Soil feeding:

Do not use fast-growth fertilizers and feed the soil in moderate amounts. You can use powder form fertilizers that you should dilute first in water. You will then apply the solution to the soil.

Trimming:

Most of the new growth of the plant should be trimmed. And the best time to do this is during spring and fall. Be sure to artistically trim the branches for beautiful results. Regular trimming of the root is also needed.

The guidelines above are basic ways on how to grow a Japanese bonsai tree. Certainly, there are more things for you to learn about this wonderful hobby so be patient, seek expert advice and just enjoy growing your bonsai.
