How To Propagate Cryptomeria Bonsai

Understand that you are not going to produce instant bonsai from the Cryptomeria Japonica, Cryptomeria, or Japanese cedar. To grow bonsai from these species you must first grow seeds, layering', grafts, or purchase the plants from nurseries. To grow the bonsai however, you can train the Cryptomeria to shape in the form of the ancient Cryptomeria Japonica bonsai.

Once you grow the seeds, layering, or purchase the plants from nurseries, you will need to learn techniques to care for your plants. First, you want to propagate the plants. You can use seeds by gathering the seedlings and planting them immediately in sand, soil and peat mixture. You will need 1/3 loam, leaf mould, and course sand to complete your planting. Growth is promoted when the plant is re-potted every few years. Preferably, re-pot the plants three to five years and re-potted during the spring.

How to prune:
You should prune the new growth by pinching out the shoots from the needles. The best time to prune is during spring and fall months. If you notice shoots growing at the chief branch or trunk, pinch them out. The foliage should also be pruned. When pruning the best solution is to use common sense. Some bonsai require debris to grow healthy, yet the Cryptomeria is not one of these plants.

NOTE: Beginners should propagate or germinate other specimens, especially if you lack knowledge and training in plant growth. This particular specimen is difficult to prune.
