Tips For Bonsai Photography

Bonsai photography is an aspect of photography where you need to have a basic understanding of bonsai gardening to be able to successfully take beautiful pictures. The art of bonsai cultivating has many rules and aspects that will need to be understood by the photographer.

Using A Backdrop For Bonsai Photography

A backdrop is a material that usually has a single color that helps to focus attention of the subject. Bonsai photography usually requires a backdrop to help bring out the details of the bonsai tree. The usual choice for a light colored plant is a black or dark backdrop. Using a light colored backdrop on a light colored plant will usually confuse the light meter and the shadows might be a problem also. The best choice for this form of photography is a black velvet backdrop.

Use A Tripod For Bonsai Photography

Bonsai photography is taking photographs of a fixed object. This means that you also need to be in a fixed position to be able to get the best angle and light needed for great photographs. A tripod is very useful for bonsai photography and any other form of photography where you are photographing a fixed subject. A tripod minimizes hand and arm movement and at the same time helps you get a fix on the right position.

Primping The Subject

Preparing the subject for bonsai photography is highly similar to preparing the models for their photo shoots. In bonsai photography the tree needs to be clean and free from debris and flaws. Wilted leaves, yellowed or dying leaves and other anomalies need to be taken care of before the bonsai photography session takes place. The soil will also look better if it is damp instead of dry. The pot that the tree is planted on must also be clean and free from mud. Some photographers and bonsai experts prefer to place their subject on a stand to better display it.

Using A Photo Editor

Many photographers use a photo editor to edit their work and achieve the best results they can possibly have for their photographs. Many refute that using a photo editor is cheating but cleaning up is necessary when you have nice photos which you know you can make greater. For bonsai photography, a photo editor can be used to create new backdrops and clean up.

Bonsai photography can be a challenge and also lots of fun for photographers. It will also help you widen your horizons and flex your photographic muscle.
